Project Management Methodology

Herne Consultants LtdThe benefits a Project Management methodology can provide
Why have a methodology?

The benefits a methodology can provide are:

common language Fewer misunderstandings through using a common language;
consistent approach A clear and consistent approach for Project Managers to follow with agreed decision points along the way;
Fewer conflicts Fewer conflicts as clear roles and responsibilities are agreed and defined up front;
integrate with the general business Ensures the application of project management methods to integrate with, rather than work against, the general business;
Effective communication Effective communication between the various parties involved in the project;
Faster implementation times Faster, and more reliable, implementation times as less effort is spent reinventing the wheel on each project;
greater understanding A greater understanding throughout the business of the need to plan and manage projects;
senior management commitment A demonstration of the commitment from senior management to the implementation of projects;
Checklists Checklists for less experienced Project Managers to reduce the amount of support they need;

All good methodologies should look very similar. Mankind has been managing projects for thousands of years. We should have a pretty good idea of what works and what does not by now!

So why use Profit Linked Quality rather than any other method?

Profit Linked Quality gives:

Financial  control Controlled management of change by the business in terms of investment and return on investment through the financial tracking system;
User involvement active involvement of the users of the final product throughout its development to ensure the business product will meet the functional, environmental, service and management requirements of the users;
organisational structures clear organisational structures, roles, processes and terminology for Project Managers to use on any project in any organisation;

We liked the following quote from Randy Mott, CIO of Dell and the former CIO of retail giant Wal-Mart:

As soon as we created a process of having all of our projects reported in a common way, tracked in a common way and referred to in a common way, we began to realise that, in six different areas, we had these plans to do the same thing...

These proposed projects could then be consolidated and implemented just the once, saving Dell a considerable amount of money.
