What is an Interim Manager? An Interim Manager will provide specialist resources for a limited period:
A) to fill a gap in a senior position - for example where someone has left at short notice, or is on long term sickness, and you need to fill the gap until they return or a permanent replacement can be recruited; B) to cover a transitional period until the need ends or the situation warrants a permanent appointment. This allows the incumbent to completely focus on the assignment, rather than it being an extra responsibility loaded onto an existing executive's workload.
Our Philosophy:We believe that part of our brief as Interim Manager is to add value to your organisation. This can mean taking the opportunity to reorganise a department, to develop staff, to introduce change, to improve efficiency. Of course we "hold the fort", but this is an opportunity for you to get some "free" consultancy into the bargain!
Because of the nature of Interim Management requirements, we always have a small number of interim managers immediately available.
Interim Management Assignments
Type "A"
It is tragic when you have to sack an employee for fraud, even worse if it is your Finance Director. A computer retailer found themselves in this unenviable position following a routine inspection of the accounts whilst their FD was on holiday - he was sacked on his return from holiday; by then our man was already in the hot seat, reassuring banks and creditors, and stayed there until a new permanent replacement started three months later; One of our consultants was managing the acquisition of two new companies for a client, when their Financial Controller announced he was leaving for another job. Due to an administrative oversight he was only on two weeks notice. Our client immediately decided to ask our consultant to step into the breach as interim financial controller until the candidate of their choice took up position six months later; Maternity leave - or as someone said "it's a fact of new life". A number of assignments have involved interim management in this situation, providing a smooth handover and security for the person on maternity leave, knowing that their replacement is definitely not after their job; Type "B"
General Management of UK Limited Company. Parent company major Australian Communications multinational. Successfully reorganised Sales Office structure and staffing, increasing sales from £6M to £9.5M in consecutive financial years. The UK limited company did not have (or need) a General Manager before or after this reorganisation, however it required an interim manager to initiate and implement this operational change programme; An insurance company sold a subsidiary, which in the insurance world takes around six months to take effect, however the IT Manager of this subsidiary decided to leave immediately, creating a "temporary" hole. The new parent company did not want a new IT Manager appointed, the existing owners could not continue to run their subsidiary without one. One of our Consultants stepped into the breach for six months; Unfortunately it isn't always success that brings a need for Interim Managers. We have assisted in Insolvency / Close down situations, where the company needs to continue to be managed, however senior staff are (understandably) looking to move to new pastures; We are often asked to "fill" a space during mergers and acquisitions, whilst major reorganisations are taking place. We have successfully completed the administrative and operational integration of acquired companies (and then helped recruit and hand over to the permanent team). Indeed we are often asked to help the selling or buying company during a "Due Diligence" phase. Still wondering about Interim Management? - The choice is yours...
You have suddenly lost your Chief Executive or Finance Director - do you:
Rush to recruit a permanent replacement as quickly as possible. This is urgent, so you pick the first agency you can find, they only deal with certain publications so this restricts where adverts may be placed (and may well increase their cost, and decrease the chance of hitting your real target audience!), and you find that you are getting a lesser quantity and quality of applicants. You will be sorely tempted to favour applicants who are available quickly, rather than choosing the best candidate irrespective of lead time - lets face it the pressure is ON! Even with rushed recruitment there is still a gap of at least two months during which the level of service or performance declines, financial risks increase, other staff are overworked and under increased stress, and the uncertainty creates demotivation; Get an Interim Manager: An experienced person steps into the role next Monday. They work either full time or part time depending upon the need. The person has the flexibility to continue until you have found the ideal successor, whether this is two months or six months.
