BACKGROUND:
Although languages are very important in the modern day International Business World, an understanding of the cultures that accompany those languages is even more important.
And this is not just the case when the language happens to be different:
George Bernard Shaw famously described England and America as "two countries separated by the same language".(This of course referred to the lack of awareness of the cultural differences between the two countries, with people assuming that a "similar language" means identical culture...)
CULTURES:We have the benefit of a group of nomadic consultants, who have built up cross-cultural expertise by virtue of starting their life in one country, moving through at least one other and ending up yet somewhere else. For instance:and so we could go on....
- Our MD was born in the UK, lived in Holland for 11 years, has worked for over 5 years in Germany, 1 year in Switzerland and has two years experience of working for an Australian Company.
- A Senior Consultant, born in Holland, worked in the US and now resident in the UK.
- A Senior Associate, born in Sweden, with a British and German MBA, she has also lived in France, Switzerland and Germany and is now resident in Britain.
- A Senior Consultant, born in Scotland of Italian parents, worked for 2 years in Mexico, 3 years in Holland and 1 year in Switzerland.
- A Senior Associate, born in the UK, brought up in Ireland, lived in Holland and now resident in Italy.
We can therefore provide Consultants who have worked with CEOs and Executives of leading European, Australian and American corporations, advising them on cross-cultural issues, especially relating to mergers and acquisitions.
As an introduction to these issues you may well wish to read a lighthearted view of cultural differences, or learn how to protect yourself against Culture Shock!, followed by attending one of our cross-cultural Seminars!![]()
